Decarb Bubble Hash for Edibles

Your 1-2 star hash from the 160μ and 120μ bags is the perfect edible ingredient. It's too harsh to smoke but loaded with cannabinoids. Here's how to decarb it and calculate dosing.

Why You Need to Decarb

Raw cannabis contains THCA, not THC. THCA doesn't get you high — it needs heat to convert into active THC through decarboxylation. When you smoke or vape hash, the flame or heating element does this instantly. In edibles, you need to do it beforehand.

Skip decarbing and your edibles will be weak or inactive. This is the most common mistake people make when cooking with hash.

Bubble hash decarbs faster and more evenly than flower because it's already concentrated and finely divided. No stems, no plant matter blocking heat penetration. A small amount goes a long way — 1g of 3-star hash contains as much THC as 3-5g of good flower.

For most home hashers, oven decarb is the move. It's fast, requires nothing you don't already own, and produces reliable results. Sous vide is better if you own an immersion circulator and care about smell control.

Oven Method — Step by Step

Step 1 — Preheat to 230°F (110°C)

Use an oven thermometer ($8 at Canadian Tire) to verify — most ovens are off by 10-25°F. This matters. Too hot and you burn off THC. Too cool and decarb is incomplete.

Step 2 — Prep the Hash

Break your hash into small pieces (pea-sized or smaller) and spread on parchment paper on a baking sheet. Smaller pieces decarb more evenly. If your hash is powdery (microplaned), even better — spread it in a thin layer.

Cover the baking sheet with aluminum foil, crimped tight around the edges. This traps volatile compounds and reduces smell.

Step 3 — Bake

For bubble hash: 25-35 minutes at 230°F. Start checking at 25 minutes. The hash should be darker, slightly crumbly, and have a toasty smell. It should NOT be black or smell burnt.

Higher-grade hash (4-5 star) with more trichome oil decarbs faster. Lower-grade hash (1-2 star) with more plant material takes slightly longer. When in doubt, pull it at 30 minutes — slight under-decarbing is better than over-cooking.

Step 4 — Cool and Use

Let it cool completely on the baking sheet. The decarbed hash can now be added directly to recipes, dissolved into butter or oil, or eaten as-is (mixed into yogurt, on toast, in capsules).

Warning: your kitchen will smell. Even with foil cover, oven decarb produces noticeable cannabis odour. If this is a concern (apartment, roommates), use the sous vide method instead — zero smell escapes the sealed bag.

Sous Vide Method

This is the precise, smell-free method. You need an immersion circulator — the Anova Precision Cooker ($100-150 on Amazon.ca) is the standard home choice.

Step 1: Put your hash in a small vacuum-seal bag or ziplock bag with the air pressed out. Double-bag it for safety.

Step 2: Set your sous vide to 203°F (95°C). This is slightly lower than the oven method because the water bath delivers heat more efficiently — every molecule of hash reaches the target temp, no hot spots.

Step 3: Submerge the bag for 60-90 minutes. Weigh it down if it floats. Walk away.

Step 4: Remove, cool, open the bag. Done. Zero smell during the process, perfect decarb every time.

The sous vide method is also ideal if you're decarbing high-grade hash (4-5 star) that you'd normally press into rosin. The sealed bag preserves every volatile compound. But honestly, if your hash is 4-5 star, you should probably be pressing it rather than eating it.

Dosing Guide — How Much to Use

This is where people either make incredible edibles or put themselves on the moon for 8 hours. Bubble hash is concentrated. Treat it with respect.

Estimated THC by Hash Grade

Hash GradeEstimated THC1g of Hash ContainsAt 10mg/serving

4 star50-70%500-700mg THC50-70 servings
3 star35-55%350-550mg THC35-55 servings
2 star20-40%200-400mg THC20-40 servings
1 star10-25%100-250mg THC10-25 servings

Not sure what grade your hash is? Check the star rating guide. If you haven't tested it, assume the lower end of the range for your grade and adjust from there.

Start with 5-10mg THC per serving. Health Canada defines a standard dose as 10mg for the legal market. If you're new to edibles, start at 5mg and wait 2 hours before taking more.

Edibles hit differently than smoking — the onset is slower (45-90 minutes) but the effect is stronger and lasts 4-8 hours. You can always eat more. You cannot eat less.

Quick Dosing Math

Say you have 2g of 2-star hash from your 160μ bag. Conservative estimate: 25% THC = 500mg total THC in 2g.

You want to make a batch of 24 cookies at 10mg each = 240mg needed. Use roughly 1g of your hash for the batch. Save the rest for another round.

Dissolve the decarbed hash into the butter or oil called for in your recipe. The THC is already activated — it just needs a fat to bind to for absorption. Butter, coconut oil, or any cooking oil works.

Making Cannabutter with Hash

Cannabutter from hash is faster and cleaner than from flower. No straining, no green colour, no plant taste.

Step 1: Decarb your hash using either method above.

Step 2: Melt butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Don't boil it. Low simmer, just enough to keep it liquid.

Step 3: Crumble the decarbed hash into the melted butter. Stir for 5-10 minutes on low heat. The hash dissolves into the fat. With high-grade hash, it dissolves almost completely. With 1-2 star hash, you'll have some sediment — that's fine, it still works.

Step 4: Pour into a container and refrigerate. Use in any recipe that calls for butter. That's it — no hours of simmering, no cheesecloth straining, no mess.

Ratio suggestion: 1g of hash per ½ cup (1 stick) of butter for moderate-strength cannabutter. Adjust based on your hash grade and desired potency per serving.

Best Hash Grades for Edibles

Use your 1-2 star hash. This is material from the 160μ and 120μ bags — too much plant matter for smoking, but the cannabinoids are still fully present. Edibles are the highest and best use for this grade. Check the low-grade hash guide for more ideas.

3-star hash works great if you have plenty. It makes cleaner, better-tasting cannabutter than lower grades. But if your supply is limited, press it into temple balls instead — that's a better use of mid-grade material.

Don't waste 4-6 star hash on edibles. That's rosin-grade material. Press it. Making edibles with full-melt hash is like using wagyu for ground beef — technically works, but you're throwing away what makes it special.

Smell Control for Apartment Dwellers

Oven decarb smells. Period. If you live in a Canadian apartment or condo where smell is a concern, here are your options ranked by effectiveness:

Sous vide in sealed bag: Zero smell. The best option for apartments. The sealed bag contains everything.

Ardent FX decarb machine: Very low smell. The sealed chamber contains most odour. About $280-320 on Amazon.ca. Worth it if you make edibles regularly and need discretion.

Mason jar method: Seal hash in a mason jar (finger-tight, not clamped — pressure needs to escape slightly). Place in a pot of simmering water for 60-90 minutes. Most smell stays in the jar. Cheaper than sous vide, nearly as effective at smell containment.

Oven with foil and ventilation: Wrap baking sheet tightly in foil. Run your range hood on high. Open a window. This reduces smell by maybe 60%. Your neighbours will still know.
